Notes From a Recent Planning Session

We spent a full morning in Kuching reviewing truss spacing for a chemical storage facility near the river. The client's original spec called for 6-meter bays, but the crane reach and bolt access made 4.5 meters more practical. This post walks through the load calculations we rechecked, the ventilation clearances that changed the ridge height, and why the coating spec had to be upgraded for the coastal humidity. If you are preparing a similar bid, the checklist at the end will save you a site visit.

A Practical Look at the First Week

Day one on a distribution center roof in Johor started with a crane path that looked fine on paper but turned out to be too soft after two days of rain. We laid steel plates and re-routed the lift sequence, which cost us about six hours. The rest of the week was about getting the purlin alignment right before the cladding crew arrived. This post covers the scheduling decisions, the bolt torque checks we ran twice, and the communication protocol that kept the concrete crew and the steel crew from colliding.

What Changed After the Initial Review

The first structural review of a warehouse roof in Penang flagged several issues that did not show up in the original design package. The main change was adding intermediate bracing along the 40-meter span because the wind load model underestimated the exposure on the east elevation. We also swapped the standing seam profile for a trapezoidal sheet after the contractor pointed out that the seam clips would slow down the install. This post explains what triggered each revision and how we communicated the changes to the fabricator without delaying the steel order.
